The Rukanlepolinna log house in a snowy landscape, the whole building in view

East Ruka · Kuusamo

Days on the snow. Nights by the fire.

Two log apartments on Hissikuja. Lifts 600 metres away, a cross-country trail at 300 metres – and room for the whole group in the same yard.

On the slopes in the morning, in the sauna at night

When the boots come off and the lifts go quiet, Rukanlepolinna is waiting in its own calm. Two log apartments built in 2005: a heat-retaining fireplace, a private electric sauna, and a short walk back to the snow.

We are not at the foot of the lift – and that is the point. A 600-metre walk to Vuosseli III and RukaExpress keeps the cabin peaceful, yet close to the slopes and trails. The SkiBus stops 100 metres away. A snowboard and a pair of skis belong here as naturally as the evening sauna.

The season

When to visit

Christmas, the February ski break and Easter fill first – and for good reason. But Ruka’s season is among the longest in Finland, often from October to May and more than 200 ski days. In the quieter weeks you get the same slopes, shorter queues and more room to breathe.

October–November

Early season, first tracks

Ruka often opens in October, among the first resorts in Europe. Fresh snow, quieter slopes and room to find your rhythm – winter has just begun, and the queues have not.

December before Christmas

Snow is here, the rush is not

The lights are on and the lifts are running, but the busiest Christmas weeks have not yet started. A good window if you want winter without the peak-season crowds.

January

Kaamos, northern lights, quiet slopes

After Christmas the slopes ease off. The polar twilight turns the days blue and the nights bright with stars – and auroras when the sky clears. The same snow, fewer people.

Christmas, ski break, Easter

Peak weeks

These weeks fill first, and for good reason. If they are the dates you want, check availability early on Lomarengas.

March–April

Spring skiing

The days grow longer, the snow softens and the slopes still hold. Prime time for snowboarders and skiers: more light, and spring snow you can ride for hours.

April–May

Spring sun

The sun sits high, and Ruka’s season often runs into May. Long days, soft snow and space on the hill – late spring can be the finest part of winter.

Ruka has 41 slopes and 22 lifts. This house is built around winter; summer and autumn colours stay in the background for now, even though the Valtavaara day trail starts 700 metres away and Oulanka National Park is 28 kilometres from the door.

After the slopes

Sauna heat and firelight

The snow stays outside. Inside, the logs hold the warmth, the heat-retaining fireplace sets the tone for the evening, and your own electric sauna brings your legs back from the hill or the trail. There is no need to rush to the next activity – a warm room and quiet are enough.

In the morning the same path leads back to the snow: 600 metres to the lifts, 300 metres to the trail.
