Snow-covered spruces in Ruka

East Ruka

The slopes nearby, the cabin in its own quiet

Snowboard, downhill and cross-country – and a 600-metre walk back to the fireplace.

Winter

The snow is why you come

Ruka was made for snow, and Rukanlepolinna was made for coming back from it. The nearest lifts, Vuosseli III and RukaExpress, are about 600 metres away – not ski-in, ski-out, but a short walk that keeps the cabin’s own calm.

The cross-country trail is 300 metres away, a snowmobile trail 200 metres. The SkiBus stops 100 metres from the door if the day takes you further across the hill or into the village. Vuosseli is 400 metres away; the nearest restaurants are Ski Bistro and Camp Kitchen & Bar.

Ruka

One of Finland’s longest seasons, slopes and trails close by

Ruka has 41 slopes and 22 lifts. The season often opens in October and runs into May – more than 200 ski days, among the longest in Finland. That is why it is worth coming outside the peak weeks as well: the same fell, shorter queues.

From East Ruka you can walk to the Vuosseli slopes. Snowboarders and skiers share the same hill; for cross-country the trail starts 300 metres away, and the Ruka area has tens of kilometres of tracks.

Ruka village is 4.3 kilometres away – restaurants, rental shops and evening life, reached by the SkiBus from 100 metres outside the cabin. Oulanka National Park is 28 kilometres away, and the Karhunkierros trail crosses the same hills. Husky and reindeer safaris run in the Ruka–Kuusamo area through the winter season.

The season

When to visit

Peak weeks – Christmas, the winter ski break and Easter – fill first. A quieter week in the early season, in January or under the spring sun often gives you more space, both on the hill and in the evening.

October–November

Early season, first tracks

Ruka often opens in October, among the first resorts in Europe. Fresh snow, quieter slopes and room to find your rhythm – winter has just begun, and the queues have not.

December before Christmas

Snow is here, the rush is not

The lights are on and the lifts are running, but the busiest Christmas weeks have not yet started. A good window if you want winter without the peak-season crowds.

January

Kaamos, northern lights, quiet slopes

After Christmas the slopes ease off. The polar twilight turns the days blue and the nights bright with stars – and auroras when the sky clears. The same snow, fewer people.

Christmas, ski break, Easter

Peak weeks

These weeks fill first, and for good reason. If they are the dates you want, check availability early on Lomarengas.

March–April

Spring skiing

The days grow longer, the snow softens and the slopes still hold. Prime time for snowboarders and skiers: more light, and spring snow you can ride for hours.

April–May

Spring sun

The sun sits high, and Ruka’s season often runs into May. Long days, soft snow and space on the hill – late spring can be the finest part of winter.

In summer and autumn the Valtavaara day trail starts 700 metres away and Oulanka National Park lies 28 kilometres from the door – side paths around winter, not instead of it. This house belongs to the snow.
